Fanny and Alexander

Stage Design

Fanny and Alexander, is a stage play and movie by Ingmar Bergman, about how people act and the roles they take in society. A science-fiction aesthetic is evoked through a surreal stage setting. The audience sits around the centerpiece: a round platformthat is back-lit and mirrored in the varnished floor. Above the platform, a single tube surrounded by monitors, is used for the important and mysterious second layer, in which the leading actor needs to escape from time to time. The scene is framed by capsules, used by the actors to rest during night-time.
